NIOZ, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, is the Dutch national oceanographic institute, and it is one of Europe’s leading oceanographic institutes. NIOZ is uniquely located on the Wadden Sea coast. It employs over 250 staff: research scientists, lab assistants, technicians, ship crews, and auxiliary staff.
Our primary mission is to acquire and disseminate knowledge of seas and oceans. We wish to contribute to a sustainable future by increasing knowledge of our planet. We conduct research ourselves and we participate in numerous international projects, studying sites ranging from the Wadden Sea to the tropics and from the ocean near South-Africa to the Arctic Ocean. We also support marine research and education in the Netherlands and Europe. Our work focuses on pioneering and independent fundamental research into sea and ocean processes

Marine research is carried out by five science departments; Physical Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Marine Ecology, Marine Organic Biogeochemistry, and Marine Geology. The research of the institute focuses on five multidisciplinary research themes: Open ocean processes, Sea floor dynamics, Wadden and shelf sea systems, Climate variability and the sea, and Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.

The department of Physical Oceanography aims at the study of ocean dynamics on a large range of spatial and temporal scales, and with a variety of techniques. The research methods cover dedicated research cruises, monitoring by means of moored instrument packages, remote sensing, instrumented commercial vessels, hydraulic laboratory models, and analytical and numerical models.
For the research project “Chances for West” the department has an opportunity for a

PhD student (KvW-Efro project)
Vacancy number 2010-089

Project description:
As part of the Operational Programme "Kansen voor West" (Chances for West), that is part of the EFRO European Fund for Regional Development, NIOZ will participate in a research programme as part of the project "Ontwikkeling grootschalige inzet offshore getijstroomenergie" (Development large-scale application offshore tidal energy). This project studies the feasibility of a floating tidal power plant in the western Wadden Sea. NIOZ will participate in this project with a study on the natural spatial and temporal variation of currents, silt concentrations and sediment transport, and their interaction with the tidal power plant. Measurements will be carried out in the western Wadden Sea near Texel (North Holland) with the aim of determining the spatial and temporal variations in current velocity and concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM), on the spatial scales of basins and channels and on seasonal as well as tidal time scales. In these measurements, newly developed acoustical and optical calibration techniques will be used. This program has been inspired by current measurements to determine the optimal location for a floating tidal power plant. The PhD-project involves the active participation in the measurement campaigns, the analysis and interpretation of the data, and the development of conceptual physical models for understanding the dominant features. Numerical work will be carried out jointly with linked projects. An important part of this project is also the communication and exchange of results with other research institutes and industries, involved in the project.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative person with a MSc degree in Physical Oceanography, Civil Engineering, Physics, or a related subject, preferably with experience in coastal hydrodynamics and affinity with observational work. Fluency in English is a prerequisite. We expect that the candidate will successfully complete a PhD thesis.

Further information about the position can be obtained from Dr. Hendrik M. van Aken (department head FYS), e-mail, phone: +31- 222- 369416 or Dr. Janine Nauw (tel. +31-222-369564, More information about NIOZ and our current projects can be found on our website:

We offer: a fulltime PhD position for 4 years, a pension scheme, a yearly 8% vacation allowance, year end bonus and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Labour Agreement of the Research Centres.

Applications: Applicants should send an application letter, CV with reference list, and a statement of (future) research interests to the Personnel Department, attended to Mrs. Jolanda Evers, NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, P.O. Box 59, 1790 AB Den Burg, the Netherlands, or preferably per e-mail to:

Closing date: 1 January 2011, or until a qualified candidate is identified. Envisaged starting date: 1st February 2011.
