Wageningen University

Vacancy number: PSG-PPS-0003
Location: Gelderland
Department: Wageningen University
Function type: Assistant or Associate Professors
Scientific field: Agriculture and Natural Environment
Closing date for applications: 30 August 2011

We are looking for
Our key domain is the integration of knowledge through system analysis to comprehend current systems and design new ones to the dual goals of sustainable production systems: optimal production of crops (in interaction with livestock) combined with efficient and equitable management of natural resources in their broadest sense. A primary goal is to develop tools and methodologies that allow analysis and design of alternative future scenarios at local, regional, national, international and global scales. For this we use a variety of approaches that include several types of computer based modelling. We seek expertise to complement and strengthen our team. We anticipate that you will develop new research directions within our main area of focus, together with others within the group. New research can be targeted at a variety of system levels or scales. Areas of interest include agricultural production systems in temperate and tropical regions; agronomy of temperate and tropical crops; perennial crops and agroforestry; simulation modelling; a strong background in mathematics and/or physics, and/or linking scientific knowledge to decision making, policy and policy makers. You will teach courses related to systems analysis, or underpinning components and methods and develop lecture notes, practical exercises and background reading materials. You will supervise students for MSc projects and co-supervise PhD students.

We ask
You have a PhD in simulation modelling at crop or system scale or another topic that suits you to work on systems analysis and integration. You have thorough knowledge of temperate and/or tropical crops and agricultural systems. You have a proven publication record in international journals and a wish to work closely with others in a team. You have good communication skills, preferably with experience in teaching and student supervision at postgraduate level. Experience in writing of successful research proposals is an advantage, or a skill that you must quickly develop.

The following competences are important: creativity, analytical capacity, communicating, collaboration, coaching, daring and individual oriented leadership.

We offer
A position as an assistant professor for 0,8-1 fte. We offer you as talented scientist a challenging career trajectory called Tenure Track. From the position of Assistant Professor you can grow into a Professor holding a Personal Chair. Of course training and coaching are provided and interdisciplinary (international) cooperation is stimulated. You will also be given the chance to build up your own research line. As we will only be selecting outstanding candidates to take part in Tenure Track, this will be a good stepping stone to a further career within Wageningen UR or elsewhere. We offer you a temporary contract, which, based on performance, can lead to a permanent employment contract. Gross salary per month: from € 3195,00 to € 4374,00, based on full time employment and dependent on expertise and experience. For questions about this vacancy you can contact Prof.dr.ir. Martin van Ittersum, e-mail: martin.vanittersum@wur.nl of Dr.ir. Peter Leffelaar, peter.leffelaar@wur.nl.
For more information about Tenure Track within Wageningen UR look at www.wur.nl/UK/work

You can apply online via www.wur.nl/UK/work until 31 August 2011.
The selected candidates will get an interview with an recruiment committee.

The organization
Wageningen University and Research Centre
Delivering a substantial contribution to the quality of life. That's our focus – each and every day. Within our domain, healthy food and living environment, we search for answers to issues affecting society – such as sustainable food production, climate change and alternative energy. Of course, we don’t do this alone. Every day, 6,500 people work on ‘the quality of life’, turning ideas into reality, on a global scale.

Could you be one of these people? We give you the space you need.

Plant Production Systems
Plant Production Systems is one of the 17 chair groups of the Department of Plant Sciences of Wageningen University. The principal scientific goal of the Plant Production Systems group is the integration of knowledge to allow analysis and design of new approaches to the dual goals of sustainable production systems: optimal production of crops and livestock combined with optimal management of natural resources in their broadest sense. We develop tools and methodologies that allow analysis and design of alternative future scenarios at local (farm), regional, national, international and global scales. A special emphasis is on the use of modelling tools, although field oriented and experimental work is also performed as an essential part of testing of our concepts. Much of our work uses comparative approaches which we apply in large interdisciplinary projects such as N2Africa, SEAMLESS, AfricaNUANCES and Competing Claims on Natural Resources. Our prime scientific themes are: 1. Coupling fundamental processes in systems analysis; 2. Analysis and design of crop-livestock systems; 3. Designing the future - linking systems analyses to policy; 4. Problems of our changing world - Global change and future challenges. Societal issues that play a key role in our projects are global food security, biofuel production, climate change and resource use efficiency.
The Plant Production Systems group is responsible for a wide range of courses, from introductory courses to advanced postgraduate specialist subjects. All courses have a modular set-up and use a variety of teaching methods: lectures, practicals, computer-based tools, discussion groups, etc. For this position the systems analysis courses are particularly relevant.

The group has a strong international profile and collaborates with many partners across the world. Our website provides a good overview of activities: http://www.pps.wur.nl/UK. The Plant Production Systems group is part of the Wageningen Centre for Agro-ecology and Systems Analysis, together with the groups Animal Production Systems and Organic Farming Systems (http://www.wacasa.wur.nl/).
