Short description of activity
In line with the overall mission of the Directorate-General Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission (EC), the Institute for Energy and Transport (IET) provides scientific and technological contributions to different stages of European energy and transport policy-making on issues related to technology innovation, environmental protection, energy security, and sustainable development where a European perspective and independence of commercial and national interests are essential. Electricity and hydrogen, in a complementary way, have been earmarked as alternative energy carriers and considered essential for implementing the transition of the European energy and transport system from a fossil fuel based system to a more sustainable lower carbon system. In this context, the Institute will increase its support contribution to electrification of transport policies by means of reference laboratories for the assessment of electricity based transport technologies including fuel cells supporting the development of European and international standardisation and regulations. The current position is within the FCPoint Action (fuel cell power chain integration & testing) of the Cleaner Energy Unit (CEU) of the Institute, a very dynamic, multilingual and collaborative working environment. The project concerns the development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based fuel cell models for modelling the performance and degradation of fuel cells, their implementation into software codes and their subsequent validation and comprises specifically

• Execution of research projects and institutional activities related to numerical modelling & simulation of fuel cells from single cells to stacks
• Development, implementation, validation and benchmarking of software codes applicable to fuel cells
• Regular reporting of results in project reports and peer-reviewed scientific publications, and

Support in Action and project management including
contributions to research proposals

CAT. 30: The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. or a minimum of 5 years of research experience after the first degree giving access to doctoral studies

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a degree in engineering, physics, chemistry, or in another relevant discipline, or with minimum five years of demonstrated experience in CFD software code development and implementation including validation modelling relevant to fuel cells or other electrochemical energy technologies. Familiarity with the use of open source CFD software will be a great asset. Proficient use of English, the ability to carry out independent research and effectively communicate results in technical reports, presentations and peer-reviewed scientific publications, as well as the willingness to work in a team, is a strict need.
