reactietermijn vacature verstreken - Researcher Wind Energy O&M

ECN is the largest research centre in the Netherlands in the field of energy and holds a leading international position in the field of wind energy research. A convenient truth: the wind energy sector has been growing exponentially over the last decades and will continue this growth in the next decades as it is the only emission free bulk renewable electricity option that can be implemented in the short term at relatively low cost.

The Unit

The Unit ECN Wind Energy develops knowledge and technology for the wind energy market with a strong focus on offshore. The research program consists of activities in the fields of wind farm development, rotor and wind farm aerodynamics, wind farm operations, and controller design. The unit has approximately 45 employees and has an intermediary position between universities, the wind turbine industry, project developers, and government agencies. ECN has its own test location EWTW (ECN Wind Turbine Test Site Wieringermeer) with various turbines for experimental research and a scaled wind farm for experiments on wake aerodynamics. ECN co-operates closely with international universities and other research institutes and is getting more and more involved in high level industrial support for wind turbine manufacturers, blade manufacturers, and wind farm developers and operators.

The group Wind Energy Systems Development
Activities of the group comprise among others the development of tools and knowledge to optimise the O&M (operation and maintenance) strategies for offshore wind farms. ECN's software for modelling the O&M aspects is being used worldwide by leading project developers and turbine manufacturers. Well known in the industry are the ECN O&M Tool and the Operation and Maintenane Cost Estimator (OMCE). Next to the development of software the group also develops innovative hardware, software and measurement techniques to monitor mechanical loads in blade roots and towers at low costs (the main topics are Fibre Optic Blade Monitoring, FOBM, and the Fleet Leader concept). The results will be used by operators and OEM's to switch from preventive and corrective maintenance to condition based maintenance. The group carries out long term research projects in order to enhance its leading position and applies its knowledge and R&D results to industrial parties with the overall objective to assist these parties in lowering the O&M costs of their offshore wind farms.

The position

Researcher Operation and Maintenance of Offshore Wind Farms
At first instance you will carry out R&D projects for the development of cost modelling software, in close collaboration with industrial parties. Next to that you will get involved in the further development of software and hardware for low cost load monitoring. Later on you will get involved in transferring the R&D results to the market, among others through carrying out advisory work in this area and train customers in the use of the in-house developed software.

You have an academic technical background, preferably in the area of mechanical engineering, applied mechanics, aeronautics, or operations. Have a general knowledge of wind energy and its O&M aspects will be an advantage. You have experience in the development of software for third parties and commonly used programming languages like Matlab. You are able to analyse field and operational data to determine the optimal O&M strategies. You are expected to operate in an independent and structured manner and you function well in a team. Moreover, you have excellent speaking and writing skills in the English language; like to work in close collaboration with our customers; and you are willing to travel and work abroad for periods of days or a week.

For more information please contact Mr. L. Rademakers - Senior Manager Wind Energy Systems tel. 0224 - 564943 or by e-mail

You are invited to apply before the 1st of July through the link below.
The interviews will take place in week 28.
