The unit
The unit Biomass & Energy Efficiency focusses on research and technology development for the areas of i) thermo-chemical conversion of biomass into energy and chemicals, ii) efficient use of energy in the process industry, and iii) CO2 capture. The unit consists of four groups: Bio-energy, Sustainable Process Technology, Thermal Systems en Bio-refinery & Processing.
The group Bio-energy specializes in technology development for upgrading and efficient production of high-quality energy carriers from biomass or biowaste, such as through torrefaction and gasification. The resulting breakthroughs in technology are further developed and commercialized in close collaboration with industrial partners.
The function
We have an opening for a Mechanical Engineer in research and development projects in the area of upgrading and conversion of biomass/waste. These projects aim at the development of innovative technology to convert biomass into higher grades of energy in the most efficient and cost effective way. It is of key importance that industrialization aspects such as reliability and manufacturability are taking into account in an early stage of development. The current function takes responsibility for this.
The projects are executed in close collaboration with industry and knowledge institutes, in both national and international research frameworks. In general first principles are demonstrated on a lab scale followed by a pilot scale proof of concept. On the basis of the results of the research program, the needs in the industry, and your personal drive, you will contribute to the realization of innovative technology, as well as to the initiation of new technological developments. In this function you can develop into a project manager role.
Your profile, education and experience
You have several years of experience in the development of innovative technologies for the (chemical) process industry and/or energy industry. Experience as a project manager is a clear pro. You have an academic degree in mechanical engineering, and you have a strong affinity with process technology and energy technology. You are a creative and excellent mechanical engineer. You are self-conscious and you have a strong drive for success. You visibly take ownership for the topics at hand. You are a communicative team-player that enjoys working in multi-disciplinary teams. You are capable to build and maintain a relevant international network, and to employ this network in the acquisition of new projects as well as in identifying new technological developments. You have excellent knowledge of English both verbally and in writing. You are willing to learn Dutch.
