ECN



The Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) offers independent research and advice to governments and companies with respect to energy technology and policy. ECN Policy Studies is one of five units within ECN and employs a multidisciplinary team of seventy specialists who work nationally and internationally to provide advice and analysis in the field of energy and climate policy, using a broad range of up-to-date concepts, models and databases. ECN Policy Studies has offices in Amsterdam and Petten.



The Global Sustainability team



In this position you will be a member of the 'Global Sustainability' team within the unit Policy Studies, ECN. The Global Sustainability team is a multidisciplinary team of approximately 12 experts with technological and economical backgrounds.

The global issue of energy, climate and development is in the centre of the attention of many national and international policymakers. To help address their questions, we generate and disseminate high-quality knowledge and expertise in the field of energy and climate policy for key decision-makers and interested parties worldwide. The focus of work is on innovative policy concepts such as Low-Carbon Development Strategies (LCDS), National Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs), Green Growth, and related technology transfer and finance issues. Clients for studies are ministries (in developed and developing countries), agencies and international organizations such as CDKN, GIZ, UNFCCC, UNEP, the European Commission, and the Dutch Ministries of Economic and Foreign Affairs.



Your activities within the team



You will work in project teams which often combine qualitative analysis with quantitative tools to achieve high-quality and policy-relevant outputs. Examples of recent projects on the topic of international energy and climate policy are:
Conceptual development and identification of best practices on Green Growth, Development of NAMA proposals in developing countries and regular NAMA status updates, analysis of developing country mitigation policies, and assessment of low-carbon development options for the Governmental planning process in Kenya.

Your work often consists of quantitative analysis of global renewable energy and climate policy. You carry out research projects in interdisciplinary teams and consortia of researchers. Besides own contributions to the projects and project management, you are also active in networking and project acquisition. Furthermore, you actively disseminate project results through presentations and publications.



Your Profile



As a Consultant Energy and Climate Policy you have:

a relevant academic background (preferably economics, or natural sciences, or engineering with an accent on finance);
several years of experience, preferably in finance aspects of (energy and climate) policy;
a critical and analytical mind set with a sense for numbers (e.g. the ability to rapidly check whether data make practical sense);
curiosity, cultural sensitivity and a taste for travelling in less developed countries;
excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to play the role of an 'honest broker' of policy alternatives;
a sense for acquisition and project management;

Furthermore, we are looking for a good team player with a result-oriented working attitude.
